Travel Review of Denmark, Bornholm

Travel Icelandair – 4 stars

The trip was a coach from Minneapolis to Iceland to Copenhagen. The flight was on time. They require you to get your boarding pass at check-in, and they can check if your carry-on meets the standards. Getting a paper boarding pass through to your final destination in order to avoid rushing to get cell service to check in again for your transferring flight is recommended. I brought a carry-on, and the wheels were 1/2″ too big. They saw I had to start going through my luggage to pull out stuff, and they waved me on, and I was grateful. My bag did fit the overhead, and I took an under seat small backpack. Comfortable flight to Iceland. A good meal of open-face sandwiches, including salmon and roast beef, was served. Free inflight movies are available if you bring headphones with a prong plug adapter. Before sunset, with the faint northern lights visible over Greenland, the sun had set only a couple of hours earlier and was already starting to rise again. My plush neck pillow and the small pillow they provided were alright. We had to take a bus to reach the gate when we came to Iceland. The layout of the airport and where to go took a bit to get to, but I finally found the long line to my gate after customs stamped my passport. After waiting in line for about 40 minutes, I got up to the gate; they pulled me aside and made me check my bag. They said when you get to the plane, put it in the front of the plane so baggage workers can see it before you board. We were then bussed to the plane and stood in line to board. I flagged down one of the baggage staff passing by to load my carry-on as a better option. When we got airborne to Copenhagen, I slept for a few hours. On the trip home, I checked my bag, which was uneventful and comfortable. Customs, I filled out the standard paper documentation for my duty-free candies just to be safe. However, they seemed more concerned about whether there were fruits or vegetables. It would be nice if more info were given on what needs to be declared or what they care about.

Bornholm Denmark – 5 stars

Denmark comprises many islands, primarily what most people consider the central peninsula and one or two others. Bornholm is an island in itself. People outside of Denmark must realize that Danes consider Bornholm a hidden jewel.

White beaches, forests, cliffs, ruins, a castle with rolling countryside, and all rolled up to what looks like a magical kingdom, with cobblestones and history combined with modern Danish architecture and all the elements. The people speak their dialect of Danish and are willing to strike up a friendly conversation, and almost everyone speaks English. You must drive into Sweden to catch a modern Ferry for an hour-and-a-half trip to Ronne. I was with an old friend from Svendborg, Denmark, that picked me up at the airport in a sporty VW station wagon. After exiting the ferry with the car, the rapeseed plants were in full bloom and fragrant through the rolling countryside as we drove to Snogebaek. This is the more active town with a unique pub Soerens Vaertshus (meaning Hosthouse). A Danish singer sang live all the songs from American to Danish as everyone sang along and even danced.

My secret tip: If possible, visit Bornholm outside the Dane’s main holiday period that runs from June 27th to August 2nd. A few weeks before or after, then every thing is open and less crowded.

Camping

It’s mainly free, and some of the sites available are amazing. I found a nicely built camping hut in Sandvig by the sea and close to all the nightlife.

Guldhjem (meaning Godhome), which I know why camping there was my favorite. Nestled a few paces from the rock beach were the grounds with rocks to build a small campfire. The sounds of the sea at night, along with the chirping birds in the morning, were why you camp. The sunsets were magnificent.

Hotel Nordlandet – 5 stars

This is a hotel in Sandvig that is exquisitely remodeled by the sea. No expense is spared, and the staff is courteous and detailed, with all the charm you would expect from a high-caliber hotel without the high resort price. The rooms are modern, with lovely views and patios. It includes a Danish-style breakfast overlooking the Baltic. Jonas was the guest relationship manager and was a friendly host. The seaside has a sauna overlooking the pool, which is steps going into the Baltic Sea swim area about 100 yards from the seating areas.

Altogether the plane trip, camping, hotel, dining, and the island were a great experiences, and I highly recommend visiting.
